The film is often categorized as a splatter film rather than a slasher film due to the elevated level of gore. To achieve the bloody tears scene, according to Dick Warlock, in the mask's forehead was a bulb of fake blood, and when Dick Warlock stumbled back and put his hand on the mask is when the blood was released. In the background we see Michael sit up and turn towards her to the beat of the music. When Karen pulls up to the hospital, the hospital entrances are noticeably dark, with some lights not lit.
