Anyway, the longer the film runs the more dramatic it becomes. The writer and director is Ari Aster and this is one of his earliest career efforts. I'm certain this happens around a lot and that's the scariest fact. This is the kind of early film that gets one into the big time in Hollywood, apparently. Was this review helpful? It is thought provoking and I think does a good good of presenting an often uncontemplated take on the dark motifs the movie explores. For a debut short, they don't get much better than this. Abusive Parents: Inverted, since it's Isaiah who regularly sexually abuses his own father, Sidney.Isaiah's Hannibal Lecture towards the end implies that it was Sidney who started the abuse in the first place, but given how sociopathic Isaiah is, it's ambiguous whether or not that's true. This is a very good first impression from recently acclaimed new director, Ari Aster. Is it really justification enough for the father not to talk to parents or a psychologist because he was so ashamed. "The Strange Thing About the Johnsons" is a short film that employs psychological realism to tell a story for the sole purpose of shocking, offending, and frightening the audience.

A pointless, implausible exercise in shocking violence and gore-filled degradation, untethered to any reality, this piece did not need to be made, or if the writer-director felt it needed to be filmed, he could at least have provided some justification within the film, narrative, thematic or otherwise, for what occurs in it. My point is... Normally a horror film contains a serial killer or an undead creature or something else to that direction but The Strange Thing About the Johnsons is unique in that it features a dude who is in an abusive incestuous relationship with his father.

If you are not, you should probably avoid this one. However, the content of this project is not only disgusting, but implausible and completely ridiculous. It was not at all what I expected it to be.

Although I have watched it at least twice, I still don't know how to react with all this disturbing content in it.

This is Aster's most genre film as it feels almost 100% a drama. I would call him a horror director, however, based off the core nature of his films and some things Aster has said himself including things like he didn't intentionally set out to make a horror film from the start with "Hereditary".

Overall a nice little short film to watch for fans of "Hereditary" and "Midsommar"
