The Famous Grouse: The scotch with the little game bird on the label was the consensus choice for the title of “Best Blended Scotch.” Our contributors liked it, many of our readers gave it high marks, and it also came out with the best rating of all the whiskeys considered (albeit only by a hair).

Its rise in popularity since then has been remarkable.Much of that success has been built on Black & White’s competitive pricing and its historic links to fellow Diageo blend Legend has it that James Buchanan, one of the Victorian whisky barons, chose as brand mascots a black Scottie dog and a white Westie, or West Highland terrier, after attending a dog show.Since then, Black & White’s canine branding has been much-travelled – once the most popular blend in England, and even drunk by the Emperor of Japan in the early 20th century – and has featured in F Scott Fitzgerald’s  The Famous Grouse is obviously a blended scotch whisky, which is to say it is a blend of malt whiskies (including the Glenrothes, Highland Park Single Malt, and Macallan Single Malt), as well as whiskies made from other grains.

While Johnnie Walker Black has the reputation (and price to match), I don’t find it to be a significant improvement. From Glenfiddich to Glen Grant, these are the world’s most popular Scotch malt whiskies. For me, the nose of the Alpha Edition is chocolate and citrus with plenty of peat smoke.
