While David would be happy to hang around Cal’s cabin with his video games, his dad has a more archetypal task planned out: He’s been stalking a moose through the nearby mountains, and wants to make it David’s first kill.The Smith brothers never overdo it on any Oedipal undercurrents, and while David isn’t exactly eager to go trekking uphill through the snow for several days, he’s at least willing to go along with it. I've never felt so connected and heartbroken by a movie. City boy David (Josh Wiggins) joins his estranged reclusive father Cal (Matt Bomer) in remote Montana for some hunting. Something needs done about these movies critics who take money to give bad films good reviews. I can't think of a reason NOT to give this film a 10 but I resist giving them out so it's a 9.
"Walking Out" is kind of a hard movie to judge, because while there are some really good things in it, there are also a number of problems that make it difficult to embrace the good stuff.
The father and son go on hunting and something happens in the snow, and the son had to rescue father to the safety, but the snow kept on falling and the movie starts getting deeper and deeper and makes you stuck to it. Walking Out is a very unremarkable film and while certainly not bad has the feel of a made for TV movie. Film review of Walking Out: trouble in the mountains as a father bullies his son. Was this review helpful? Initially, their relationship is distant and strained: Cal seems hard on his son. The actors try but the script is poor. Twin brothers Alex Smith and Andrew J Smith have adapted and co-directed this film from a short story by David Quammen. And there are times when it leans too hard on the usual signifiers of Tragic Masculinity—particularly when the soundtrack brings in a holy choir to underscore the holy devotion of son to father, and vice-versa, and whenever Cal launches into philosophical frontiersman mode, explaining the mystical communion of man and nature like a graduate fiction writing student who just got back from a camping trip. When Cal asks David if he’s sure he wants to go on this moose hunting expedition, David answers honestly that he isn’t sure, but he wants to.

Indeed, they’re careful not to include too many secondary conflicts or contrived additional obstacles, and while this naturalistic approach might test viewers eager for more visceral thrills, it allows the rhythms of instinct and survival to take over.During breaks in the journey, the wounded Cal begins to reminisce about his own first moose kill when he was David’s age, occasioning some episodic flashbacks. Later, we learn matters are far more complicated, but Cal, nonetheless, seems intent on bonding with his teenage son through nature and responsible hunting (killing only what they plan to eat).He gives David the rifle his dad gave him on his 14th birthday. But, while he doesn’t articulate it, it’s clear he also yearns to be closer to his dad. What caused his break-up with David’s mother? Matt Bomer and Josh Wiggins star in this quietly moving wilderness survival tale.Crafting a convincing tale of survival against steep odds in a harsh, unforgiving landscape would seem to be out of the reach of most low-budget independent filmmakers.
